SPECIES OVERVIEW

The Amazon Basin Emerald Tree Boa (Corallus batesii) is a spectacular arboreal boa native to the Amazon Basin. Adults are characteristically green with prominent pale dorsal markings and are superbly adapted to life among branches.

It was historically treated as part of Corallus caninus, but the Amazon Basin form is now recognised as Corallus batesii. The two should therefore not simply be treated as interchangeable names for the same snake.

Amazon Basin Emerald Tree Boas are highly specialised arboreal predators. Their husbandry differs substantially from that of terrestrial boas and requires careful attention to perch design, temperature, hydration, ventilation and feeding.

They are not an appropriate choice for someone seeking a frequently handled snake. Their appeal lies primarily in observing their natural behaviour and extraordinary appearance.

This species is best suited to experienced keepers.


ADULT SIZE & LIFESPAN

Adults commonly reach approximately 5–7 ft (1.5–2.1 m) in total length, with females generally becoming larger and more heavily built than males.

Some individuals can exceed this range.

Despite their length, they possess a relatively slender, laterally compressed body suited to arboreal movement.

With appropriate husbandry, keepers should plan for a lifespan of approximately 15–20 years or potentially longer.


ENCLOSURE

Amazon Basin Emerald Tree Boas are highly arboreal, but enclosure design should provide both useful height and sufficient horizontal space.

For an average adult, approximately:

4 ft W × 2 ft D × 3 ft H
(approximately 120 × 60 × 90 cm)

should be considered a practical starting point.

Larger adults benefit from 5–6 ft of enclosure width and additional depth.

Simply providing a very tall but narrow enclosure is not ideal. These snakes spend considerable periods resting horizontally on branches and need usable horizontal pathways.

Provide:

  • Several sturdy horizontal perches
  • Perches at different heights and temperatures
  • Branch junctions
  • Dense visual cover
  • Artificial or suitable live foliage
  • Accessible drinking water
  • Shaded retreats
  • Securely fixed furnishings

Perches are particularly important.

A resting snake commonly forms characteristic coils over a horizontal branch. Perches should therefore be appropriately sized for the individual and positioned so the snake can rest comfortably without constantly gripping an excessively thin branch.

Provide several options rather than one permanent perch.

All branches must be firmly secured.


TEMPERATURE & HEATING

Emerald Tree Boas should not be maintained excessively hot.

Provide a gentle thermal gradient.

Approximately 23–25°C (73–77°F)

Night

Approximately 22–24°C (72–75°F) is generally appropriate.

Avoid prolonged temperatures substantially above the recommended range.

Because this is an arboreal snake, overhead heating is generally the most logical method of creating a warm upper zone.

The snake must be able to move horizontally and vertically away from the heat source.

All heating equipment should be thermostatically controlled and safely positioned.

Use reliable digital thermometers at different enclosure heights rather than monitoring only one location.

An infrared thermometer is useful for checking perch and surface temperatures.


LIGHTING & UVB

Provide a clear day/night cycle and good-quality daytime illumination.

Low-to-moderate UVB is recommended as part of modern, welfare-focused husbandry.

Aim for approximately UVI 1–2 at suitably exposed upper perches, while providing extensive shaded areas where UV exposure is much lower.

A low-to-moderate output linear T5 UVB lamp is generally appropriate when correctly positioned.

What this means in practice

Do not illuminate every perch equally.

Arrange the enclosure so the snake can choose between:

  • A brighter perch receiving gentle UVB
  • Partially shaded branches
  • Dense foliage
  • Areas receiving virtually no UVB

Lamp strength cannot safely be selected from percentage alone.

Actual UV reaching the snake depends on:

  • Lamp model
  • Reflector
  • Distance to the perch
  • Mesh or screening
  • Enclosure construction

Mesh can substantially reduce UVB transmission.

Follow the manufacturer’s distance guidance and ideally use a suitable UV meter to verify exposure at the branches actually used by the snake.

A photoperiod of approximately 12 hours light and 12 hours darkness is suitable as a general baseline.


HUMIDITY, HYDRATION & VENTILATION

Amazon Basin Emerald Tree Boas require humid conditions but should never be kept in a permanently saturated, poorly ventilated enclosure.

General humidity of approximately 70–85% is appropriate, with natural fluctuations.

Humidity can rise following misting and then gradually decline as surfaces dry.

This wet-to-drier cycle is preferable to continuously soaking the enclosure.

Ventilation is extremely important.

Warm, stagnant and permanently wet conditions can encourage:

  • Respiratory problems
  • Skin disease
  • Bacterial growth
  • Fungal growth

Light misting can provide drinking droplets on foliage and enclosure surfaces.

Many arboreal snakes readily drink from droplets, but this does not remove the need for a clean water container.

Provide fresh water continuously.

The bowl should be positioned where it can be accessed easily without forcing the snake to descend through an awkward enclosure layout.


SUBSTRATE & FURNISHINGS

A moisture-retentive but well-draining substrate is useful.

Suitable options include:

  • Coco husk
  • Coco fibre
  • Orchid bark
  • Cypress-type mulch
  • Appropriate soil-based mixtures
  • Leaf litter

Paper can be particularly useful during quarantine.

Avoid aromatic softwoods such as cedar and pine.

Substrate should not remain waterlogged.

The most important furnishings are the arboreal structures.

Provide multiple securely mounted branches and perches with different diameters.

Foliage should create visual security without preventing airflow.

A well-designed enclosure should allow the snake to move between heat, UV, shade and humidity zones while remaining largely above ground.


FEEDING

Amazon Basin Emerald Tree Boas are carnivorous ambush predators.

Captive animals are generally maintained primarily on appropriately sized rodents.

Suitable foods include:

  • Mice
  • Rats
  • Other appropriately sized captive-produced whole prey where suitable

Frozen-thawed prey is generally preferable where readily accepted.

Do not offer excessively large prey.

Arboreal boas can be prone to digestive difficulties when overfed, fed excessively large meals or kept at inappropriate temperatures.

Juveniles

Juveniles can generally receive an appropriately sized meal approximately every 7–10 days.

Subadults

Feeding frequency should gradually decrease as growth slows.

Adults

Adults commonly do well with an appropriately sized meal approximately every 2–3 weeks, depending on body condition and prey size.

Some mature animals may require even longer intervals.

Maintain a lean, muscular body condition.


FEEDING & DIGESTIVE HEALTH

Overfeeding is particularly undesirable in arboreal boas.

Avoid:

  • Oversized prey
  • Excessively frequent meals
  • Handling shortly after feeding
  • Feeding when enclosure temperatures are inappropriate

Regurgitation should never simply be dismissed as a minor inconvenience.

Repeated regurgitation can cause significant damage and may indicate inappropriate husbandry, excessive prey size, parasitic disease or another medical problem.

Following unexplained regurgitation, review husbandry and seek veterinary advice where appropriate rather than immediately offering another meal.


HANDLING & TEMPERAMENT

Amazon Basin Emerald Tree Boas should primarily be regarded as display animals.

Some individuals become relatively tolerant of routine keeper activity, while others remain strongly defensive.

They possess long front teeth adapted for capturing prey from branches and can deliver a significant bite.

Unnecessary handling should therefore be minimised.

When movement is required, encourage the snake to move voluntarily onto a removable branch or suitable support where possible.

Never pull an animal forcibly from a perch.

Its prehensile tail and body may be tightly wrapped around branches, and forced removal can injure the snake.

Handling immediately after feeding should be avoided.


COHABITATION

Individual housing is recommended.

Permanent cohabitation makes it more difficult to monitor:

  • Feeding
  • Defecation
  • Body condition
  • Health
  • Preferred temperature
  • Stress

Competition for preferred perches may occur even without obvious aggression.

Breeding animals should normally be introduced deliberately rather than permanently housed together.

Branches and foliage may become contaminated and should be cleaned when necessary.

Regurgitation

Can be associated with oversized prey, excessive feeding, stress, unsuitable temperatures, parasites or underlying disease.

Dehydration

Can occur despite apparently high enclosure humidity if appropriate drinking opportunities are lacking.

Retained shed

May indicate inadequate hydration or inappropriate humidity management.

Skin problems

Persistently wet surfaces and poor hygiene can contribute to dermatitis and scale problems.

Obesity

Overfeeding can result in excessive body condition and associated health problems.

Parasites

Particularly important in wild-caught or imported animals.

Infectious disease

Strict quarantine is essential when adding any boa to an established reptile collection.

Persistent appetite changes, repeated regurgitation, weight loss, respiratory symptoms, neurological abnormalities, swelling or unusual faeces require veterinary investigation.


QUARANTINE

All newly acquired Emerald Tree Boas should undergo appropriate quarantine.

Where practical, quarantine should take place in a separate room.

A quarantine enclosure still needs appropriate arboreal perches, temperature and security.

Paper substrate can simplify monitoring.

Compatible adults are generally introduced intentionally.

Females require particularly careful management during gestation, including access to an appropriate thermal gradient without excessive temperatures.

Litters consist of live neonates, which can differ dramatically in appearance from adults. Young Emerald Tree Boas may be reddish, orange or yellow before undergoing an ontogenetic colour change to green as they mature.

Breeders must have suitable individual accommodation available for offspring.

Corallus batesii is regulated under CITES Appendix II.

International trade and movement may therefore require appropriate documentation or permits depending on the circumstances and jurisdiction.

Keep purchase and provenance records and retain relevant documentation supplied with the animal.

Wild-caught animals have historically entered the international reptile trade. Captive-bred animals are strongly preferable for welfare, adaptation to captivity and conservation reasons.

Prospective keepers should check current national and local requirements before purchasing, importing, exporting or transporting an animal.

Never release an unwanted snake into the wild.
