Black-Throated Monitors are sometimes promoted as relatively calm or “tame” large monitors. Although well-socialised captive-bred individuals can become remarkably tolerant of their keepers, their potentially manageable temperament should never obscure their enormous strength, intelligence, feeding response and space requirements.

A single small spotlight is inappropriate for a large adult.
Use a bank of suitable lamps where necessary to create:
a broad, evenly heated basking surface.
Most of the animal’s body should be able to heat simultaneously.
WARM AMBIENT
Maintain the warm portion approximately:
27–30°C (81–86°F).
COOL AREA
Provide cooler areas around:
