1. Overview & Commitment

Temperament: Intelligent, inquisitive, but can be skittish if not handled early and regularly. Diurnal.
2. Vivarium/Enclosure (Extreme Heat/Space Focus)

Warning: This is a large commitment. They grow quickly and require massive adult housing.

Minimum Adult: 2.4m 8 ft long x 1.2 m 4ft deep x 0.9 m 3ft tall. Custom construction is mandatory.

Recommended Housing (Ireland): Custom PVC or heavily Sealed Wooden Enclosure is essential for maintaining the extreme heat gradient efficiently and securely.

Substrate Depth (Crucial): Provide a deep layer (at least 45 cm / 18 onches of soil/sand mix) for their mandatory burrowing behavior.
3. Heating & Temperature (Extreme Dry Heat)

Basking Spot (Surface - Mandatory): 54^C – 60^C 130F – 140^F. This is non-negotiable for digestion and health. Use a cluster of high-wattage halogen bulbs.

Hot Side Ambient: 32C – 37C (90F – 100f.

Cool Side Ambient: 23C – 26^\circ\text{C} 75F – 80F.

Control: All heat sources must be connected to a dimming thermostat.
4. Lighting & UV (Mandatory)

5. Humidity & Hydration

Ambient Humidity: Moderate, 50\% – 65\% (Burrow humidity will be higher).

Hydration: A large, sturdy water dish (big enough to soak in) must be provided.
6. Diet & Feeding

Staple Diet: Should primarily be invertebrates (Crickets, Locusts, Cockroaches, Snails, Earthworms).

Whole Prey (Limited): Small, lean rodents or chicks should be offered only occasionally (once every 1–2 weeks) to prevent severe obesity, which is common in this species.
