Crocodile Monitor (Varanus salvadorii) Care Sheet

Crocodile Monitor (Varanus salvadorii) Care Sheet

1. Overview & Commitment (Extreme Expert Level)

  • Size: 2.1 – 2.7 m. Slender body, but the longest lizard species globally.

  • Lifespan: 15 – 25+ years.

  • Temperament: Highly intelligent, extremely nervous, and potentially dangerous. Display animal only.

  • Warning: Due to their massive size, intelligence, powerful jaws, and razor-sharp serrated teeth, this species poses a significant danger and requires advanced, institutional-grade care.

2. Vivarium/Enclosure (Extreme Vertical/Aquatic Focus)

  • Minimum Adult: Requires a custom, room-sized, vertical enclosure. Minimum dimensions: 3.6 m high x 3 m wide x 2.4 m deep.

  • Recommended Housing (Ireland): Custom-built, water-sealed, reinforced enclosure (PVC/Concrete/Fiberglass) to maintain heat and humidity.

  • Structure (Crucial):

    • Height: Must prioritize height for this strictly arboreal species.

    • Climbing: Requires extremely sturdy, large diameter vertical and diagonal trunks/branches for climbing.

    • Water: A permanent, large, heated water basin/pool for soaking and swimming is mandatory.

3. Heating & Temperature (Extreme)

  • Basking Spot (Top Perch - Mandatory): 55C – 80C. This extreme surface heat is non-negotiable for digestion. A cluster of high-wattage lamps is required.

  • Ambient Warm Side: 30C – 32C.

  • Night Time: Should not drop below 21C.

  • Control: All heat sources must use dimming thermostats due to the extreme temperatures.

4. Lighting & UV (Mandatory)

  • UVB Light: High-output 10% or 12% T5 linear fluorescent tube is mandatory and must be positioned close to the basking perch.

5. Humidity & Hydration

  • Ambient Humidity: High, 70\% – 95\%.

  • Misting/Fogging (Mandatory): Requires an automated misting/fogging system to achieve and maintain rainforest humidity.

  • Water Quality: The swimming pool requires professional-grade filtration and frequent cleaning.

6. Diet & Feeding (Carnivorous)

  • Staple Diet: Whole prey items (small rodents, chicks, quails, fish, shelled hard-boiled eggs).

  • Feeding Safety (Crucial): Due to their temperament and danger, food must be offered using long snake tongs or forceps only.
