Dyeing Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius) Care Sheet

Dyeing Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius) Care Sheet

A complete guide for keeping this large, terrestrial, and popular frog. Captive-bred frogs are non-toxic.

1. Overview & Commitment

  • Common Name: Dyeing Dart Frog, Tinc

  • Scientific Name: Dendrobates tinctorius

  • Natural Habitat: Terrestrial floor of humid rainforests in French Guiana, Brazil, and Suriname.

  • Size: Large for a dart frog, reaching 3 – 6 cm (1 – 2.5 inches).

  • Lifespan: 10 – 20+ years.

  • Temperament: Bold, terrestrial, and diurnal.

2. Vivarium/Enclosure

  • Minimum Enclosure Size (Pair/Small Group): 60 x 45 x 45 cm (24 x 18 x 18 inches). Focus on floor space and horizontal arrangement.

  • Enclosure Type: Glass terrariums with a maximum of 50% screen top for humidity retention.

  • Structure: Densely planted with low-growing plants, abundant leaf litter, and cork bark flats. Provide a few stout, low branches for climbing.

3. Substrate (Bioactive Setup)

  • Layers: Mandatory drainage layer (hydroballs), thick soil/moss layer, and a generous layer of leaf litter.

  • Cleanup Crew: Springtails and Isopods are essential for waste management.

4. Heating & Temperature

  • Daytime Range (Crucial): 22°C – 26°C (72°F – 78°F).

  • Nighttime Drop: Acceptable to drop to 18°C (65°F).

  • Heat Safety: Do not exceed 27^\circ\text{C} (80^\circ\text{F}). Overheating is the primary killer of dart frogs. Heating elements are generally not necessary unless ambient room temps are too low.

5. Lighting & UV

  • Light: Full-spectrum LED grow light for plant health and observation.

  • UVB (Recommended): Low-level UVB (5-6% T5 tube) is beneficial for overall health.

  • Photoperiod: 12 hours on/12 hours off.

6. Humidity & Hydration

  • Ambient Humidity: Must be maintained between 80% and 100%.

  • Misting: Automated or manual misting 2–3 times daily with Reverse Osmosis (RO) or distilled water to keep the vivarium moist.

  • Water Feature: A small, shallow dish or water feature can be included as they will soak.

7. Diet & Feeding

  • Staple Diet: Primarily Drosophila hydei (the larger fruit fly species).

  • Supplemental Feeders: Springtails, Isopods, and small pinhead crickets.

  • Feeding Schedule: Offer food daily or every other day.

Supplementation:

  • Calcium Powder (Pure): Dust fruit flies every feeding.

  • Multivitamin: Dust fruit flies 1–2 times per week.

8. Handling & Maintenance

  • Handling: Absolutely no direct handling. Oils on human skin are toxic to their thin skin. Treat as display animals.

  • Social: Best kept in established pairs (M/F) or small groups, though aggression (toe-biting) can occur, especially between males.
