Moulting occurs underground, and buried animals should never be excavated simply because they have disappeared for an extended period.

Although generally harmless, Giant African Millipedes can produce defensive secretions capable of staining or irritating skin and sensitive tissues. Hands should therefore be washed after contact, and eye contact should be avoided.

With an appropriately prepared detritivore enclosure and a continual supply of decomposing hardwood material, Archispirostreptus gigas can be an exceptionally interesting and comparatively gentle invertebrate to observe.
