Giant Day Gecko (Phelsuma grandis) Care Sheet
A complete guide for the successful keeping of this large, beautiful, and highly active diurnal gecko from Madagascar.
1. Overview & Natural Habitat
-
Common Name: Giant Day Gecko, Phelsuma
-
Scientific Name: Phelsuma grandis
-
Natural Habitat: Humid tropical forests of northern Madagascar, including areas near human habitation like trees, homes, and plantations. They are strictly arboreal (tree-dwelling).
-
Size: Adults typically reach 25 – 30 cm (10 – 12 inches) in total length.
-
Lifespan: 10 – 20+ years in captivity.
-
Temperament: Highly active, fast, and curious during the day. They are display-only pets as their skin is delicate, and they are easily stressed by handling. They are diurnal (daytime active).
2. Vivarium/Enclosure
Giant Day Geckos are active climbers and require a substantial vertical enclosure that emphasizes height and is filled with climbing surfaces.
-
Minimum Enclosure Size (Adult): 45 x 45 x 90 cm (18 x 18 x 36 inches) or equivalent. A larger enclosure (60 x 60 x 120 cm / 24 x 24 x 48 inches) is strongly recommended due to their size and activity level.
-
Enclosure Type: Glass or PVC vivariums are suitable, as they retain the high humidity required. Good ventilation is essential to prevent stagnant air.
-
Structure: Must be heavily furnished with thick bamboo poles (their favorite), cork bark, sturdy branches, and abundant live or artificial foliage. The structures should be oriented both vertically and horizontally.
-
Hides: Provide secure hiding spots among the foliage and in cork bark tubes, particularly near the top of the enclosure where they prefer to rest.
3. Substrate
The substrate must be moisture-retaining to assist with the high ambient humidity.
-
Recommended Substrate: A deep layer of moisture-retaining material like Coconut Fiber (Coco Coir), Orchid Bark, or a Bioactive Soil Mix (soil, sphagnum moss, bark).
-
Substrate Management: Substrate should be kept moist (not soggy) and spot-cleaned daily.
4. Heating & Temperature
Day Geckos require a distinct basking spot achieved with overhead heat, as they regulate temperature during the day.
-
Primary Heat Source: An overhead basking lamp (incandescent bulb or halogen) connected to a dimming thermostat is required to create a focused hot spot.
-
Basking Surface Temp (Hot Spot): 30°C – 32°C (86°F – 90°F). This should be measured directly on a basking platform or piece of bamboo near the top of the enclosure.
-
Cool Ambient Side: 24°C – 27°C (75°F – 80°F).
-
Night Time Temperatures: Temperatures can safely drop to 18°C – 21°C (65°F – 70°F). No heat is needed at night unless temperatures fall below this range.
-
Important Note: All heating elements must be connected to a Thermostat.5. Lighting & UV
As a diurnal species, both strong lighting and UVB are absolutely essential.
-
UVB Light: A high-output UVB source (e.g., a 10% T5 linear fluorescent tube) is mandatory for Vitamin D_3 synthesis and natural color display.
-
Target UVI: Aim for a UVI of 2.0 to 4.0 in the basking area (Ferguson Zone 2 or 3).
-
Ambient Light: A full-spectrum LED is recommended to properly illuminate the enclosure and enhance the gecko’s vibrant colors.
-
Photoperiod: Maintain a consistent 12 hour day/12 hour night cycle.
6. Humidity & Hydration
High, consistent humidity is crucial, and hydration must be provided via droplets.
-
Ambient Humidity: Must be maintained between 60% and 80%.
-
Misting: The enclosure must be thoroughly misted once or twice daily, typically in the morning and evening, using a sprayer or automated system. They will lick the water droplets from leaves and walls.
-
Water Dish: A shallow water dish is not typically used for drinking, but it can help slightly with ambient humidity.
7. Diet & Feeding
Giant Day Geckos are omnivores and require a diet of insects and fruit-based supplements.
-
Staple Diet: A high-quality, commercially available Crested Gecko Diet (CGD) (like Pangea, Repashy, or others) should be offered in a shallow, elevated dish 3 times a week.
-
Live Insects (Supplemental): Feeder insects (Crickets, Dubia Roaches, Black Soldier Fly Larvae, Waxworms) should be offered 2–3 times per week for enrichment and protein. Insects should be no larger than the width between their eyes.
-
Treats: Small amounts of ripe, low-acid fruit purée (e.g., mango, banana) can be offered very sparingly.
Supplementation:
-
Insects: All insects must be dusted with Calcium with D_3 supplement and a Multivitamin powder on an alternating schedule (e.g., Cal w/ D_3 once a week, Multivitamin once a week).
-
CGD: The prepared diets are nutritionally complete and generally do not require extra supplementation.
-
Gut Loading: All feeder insects must be gut loaded with nutritious food for 12-24 hours prior to being offered.8. Handling & Temperament
-
Handling Warning: Giant Day Geckos are considered display-only pets. Their skin is extremely delicate and tears easily. If stressed or handled incorrectly, they can tear patches of skin or shed their tail.
-
Interaction: Limit interaction to maintenance and observation. If you must move the gecko, gently persuade it to walk onto a branch or cup; never grab it.
-
Temperament: They are highly territorial and can be very aggressive toward other geckos. They should always be housed singly unless they are a proven, compatible breeding pair in a very large enclosure.
