The Giant Leaf-Tailed Gecko (Uroplatus fimbriatus) is one of Madagascar’s largest and most spectacular geckos. Its enormous head, flattened body, broad leaf-like tail, bark-patterned colouration and extensive dermal fringes make it extraordinarily difficult to distinguish from a tree trunk when resting.

This is a specialist arboreal species rather than a beginner gecko.

Successful long-term husbandry depends upon providing a genuinely spacious vertically orientated enclosure, extensive bark and climbing surfaces, moderate temperatures, substantial nighttime cooling, high but fluctuating humidity, excellent ventilation, low-level UVB, reliable hydration and a varied diet of appropriately supplemented live invertebrates.

Two of the greatest husbandry dangers are:

chronic overheating and poor hydration.

A humid enclosure must also remain well ventilated. Permanently wet, stagnant conditions are not appropriate.

Captive-bred animals from traceable sources should always be preferred.

TAXONOMY

The accepted scientific name is:

Uroplatus fimbriatus

It is a distinct species within the Madagascan genus Uroplatus.

The genus has undergone substantial taxonomic revision, and several large leaf-tailed geckos once confused with or associated with U. fimbriatus are now recognised separately.

One particularly important example is:

Uroplatus giganteus

which is a distinct species.

More recently, additional large Uroplatus species have also been formally described.

For this reason, animals intended for breeding should have reliable identification and provenance.

Never intentionally hybridise different Uroplatus species.


NATURAL DISTRIBUTION

Uroplatus fimbriatus is endemic to:

Madagascar.

It occurs primarily within humid forest habitats of eastern Madagascar.

Its distribution has historically been reported across a relatively broad portion of the eastern forest zone, although taxonomy and population boundaries within the large-bodied Uroplatus complex have changed as research has progressed.


NATURAL HABITAT

Giant Leaf-Tailed Geckos are highly specialised arboreal reptiles.

They spend much of their time on:

During daylight they commonly rest flattened against tree trunks.

At night they become considerably more active and move through the vegetation hunting prey.

WHY OVERHEATING IS SO IMPORTANT

Uroplatus are frequently maintained incorrectly because keepers assume that a tropical Madagascan reptile must require very high temperatures.

Humid forests can be warm, but shaded arboreal reptiles have access to much cooler microclimates than an exposed thermometer reading might suggest.

A captive enclosure removes many natural escape options.

Therefore:

a safe cool retreat must always be available.


SUMMER HEAT MANAGEMENT

During warm weather, cooling may become more important than heating.
