Reticulated Python (Malayopython reticulatus) Care Sheet

Reticulated Python (Malayopython reticulatus) Care Sheet

A complete guide for the successful keeping of this extremely large, highly intelligent, and advanced-level snake, emphasizing immense space and advanced security.

1. Overview & Commitment

  • Common Name: Reticulated Python, Retic

  • Scientific Name: Malayopython reticulatus

  • Natural Habitat: Tropical rainforests and woodlands near water sources across Southeast Asia. They are semi-arboreal when young, becoming primarily terrestrial as adults.

  • Size (Extreme): Among the world’s longest snakes. Average mainland adults reach 3 – 6 m (10 – 20+ feet). Dwarf and Superdwarf morphs are much smaller, maxing out around 1.2 – 3 m (4 – 10 feet).

  • Lifespan: 25 – 35+ years in captivity.

  • Temperament: Highly intelligent and can be socialized, but their immense size means they require multiple people to safely handle, regardless of temperament. Advanced-Level, High-Commitment Pet.

2. Vivarium/Enclosure

Reticulated Pythons require custom-built, institutional-grade security and space.

  • Minimum Adult Enclosure (Extreme): For a 5 m (16 ft) snake, the enclosure should be at least 4.8 \text{ m} (16 \text{ ft}) long, 2.4 \text{ m} (8 \text{ ft}) deep, and 2.4 \text{ m} (8 \text{ ft}) tall. Custom, walk-in rooms are often necessary.

  • Type: Custom-built wooden or PVC enclosures with reinforced, lockable doors are mandatory for safety and security.

  • Structure: Provide massive, custom-fabricated logs and platforms for climbing and resting. The floor space must allow the snake to stretch out comfortably.

  • Hides: Two immense hides are needed—warm and cool—large enough for the snake to coil and feel completely secure.

3. Substrate

The substrate must manage high humidity in a large volume.

  • Recommended Substrate: A deep layer of moisture-retaining material such as Cypress Mulch, Orchid Bark, or a mix of soil and moss.

  • Management: Keep the substrate damp, but not soaking wet.

4. Heating & Temperature

Reticulated Pythons require immense heating capacity due to their volume.

  • Primary Heat Source: Large heat panels or powerful Ceramic Heat Emitters (CHEs) connected to a Thermostat.

  • Basking Spot/Hot Spot: A surface temperature of 32°C – 34°C (90°F – 93°F).

  • Cool Side Ambient: 26°C – 29°C (78°F – 84°F).

  • Night Time: Drop to 24°C – 26°C (75°F – 78°F).

5. Lighting & UV

  • UVB: Low-level UVB (e.g., 6% T5 tube) is highly recommended due to the snake’s activity and large size.

  • Photoperiod: Maintain a consistent 12-hour cycle.

6. Humidity & Hydration

High, stable humidity is crucial for shedding and respiratory health.

  • Ambient Humidity: Must be maintained between 60% and 80%.

  • Misting/Soaking: Automated misting systems are often required. A large, permanent, easily drained water tub is mandatory for soaking and drinking.

7. Diet & Feeding

Reticulated Pythons are carnivores requiring infrequent but massive meals.

  • Staple Diet: Frozen/thawed rabbits, large guinea pigs, or chicks. Prey size is determined by the snake’s size.

  • Feeding Schedule (Adult): A very large meal every 3–6 weeks.

  • Warning: Retics are prone to obesity and can live off the scent of a large meal for a long time. Overfeeding is extremely dangerous.

8. Handling & Maintenance

  • Handling (Crucial): Requires constant, firm socialization and conditioning from a young age. Never attempt to handle an adult alone. Always adhere to the “one handler per 1.5 m (5 ft) of snake” rule.

  • Safety: Due to their massive size, they pose a significant risk; specialized training and safety protocols are mandatory for responsible keeping.
