Introduction

The Royal Python (Python regius), also widely known as the Ball Python, is one of the most commonly maintained snakes in captivity.

Its popularity comes from its manageable adult size, generally calm temperament, attractive natural markings and enormous variety of selectively bred colour and pattern morphs.

The name “Ball Python” refers to the species’ characteristic defensive behaviour of curling tightly into a ball with the head protected inside the coils.

Despite their reputation as straightforward snakes, Royal Pythons have specific environmental requirements.

Problems with inappropriate temperatures, low humidity, inadequate enclosure security, obesity and unsuitable feeding practices are common in captivity.

A well-designed enclosure should allow the snake to thermoregulate, hide securely, climb, explore and choose between different temperature and humidity zones.

Enclosure

Royal Pythons benefit from an enclosure large enough to allow normal movement, exploration and thermoregulation.

provides a sensible minimum target.

Larger individuals benefit from additional space.

Juveniles can be maintained successfully in appropriately smaller accommodation provided that:

  • The enclosure is escape-proof

A large enclosure does not inherently stress a Royal Python.

An inadequately furnished, exposed enclosure can cause insecurity regardless of its size.

Security

Royal Pythons are powerful animals and surprisingly capable escape artists.

The enclosure must be securely closed.

A snake can push through surprisingly small or poorly secured openings.


Temperature Gradient

Royal Pythons require access to a thermal gradient.

A modest nighttime temperature reduction is acceptable.

Night temperatures around:

The snake must always be able to retreat to cooler conditions.


Heating

Overhead heating is an effective way to provide warmth.

Royal Pythons can survive without artificial UVB when other husbandry and nutrition are appropriate, but modern husbandry increasingly provides low-level UVB as a beneficial component of captive care.

A suitable low-output linear UVB source allows the snake to regulate its own exposure.

The enclosure must also contain:

  • Areas completely removed from UVB exposure

UVB strength depends upon:

  • Lamp type

Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the particular lamp being used rather than choosing a lamp solely by percentage.

UVB should never be used as a substitute for correct heating.


Humidity

Royal Pythons should not be maintained in excessively dry conditions.

Humidity can rise during the night and following misting before decreasing somewhat during the day.

During shedding, access to the higher end of the range can be particularly beneficial.

Poor ventilation combined with constantly wet substrate can contribute to:

Climbing

Royal Pythons are often incorrectly described as animals that never climb.

They are capable climbers and many captive individuals will use sturdy branches and elevated platforms when these are provided.

  • Positioned to prevent dangerous falls

Climbing opportunities are particularly valuable for younger and male Royal Pythons, although individuals of either sex may use them.


Water

Fresh drinking water must be available at all times.

Provide a sturdy water bowl large enough for comfortable drinking.

Some Royal Pythons may occasionally soak.

Water should be changed regularly and immediately whenever contaminated.

The bowl should be cleaned routinely.
