Using Sub-Forums and Tags

Finding the Right Home: Using Sub-Forums and Tags

We have a massive community of knowledgeable keepers, but they can only help you if they see your question! Posting in the correct place is the single most important thing you can do to get a fast, helpful response.

Here is your guide to navigating ReptileCommunity.com using Sub-Forums and Tags.

1. Understanding Sub-Forums (The Organization)

Sub-Forums are the main “departments” of our community. They keep broad topics separate. Think of them as dedicated rooms in our reptile house!

The Golden Rule: Always look for the most specific Sub-Forum before posting.

How to Choose: Before clicking “New Thread,” check the main forum page and navigate into the category that best matches your reptile species or the topic of your question (Care, Health, Breeding, etc.).

2. Using Tags (The Search Power)

Tags are keywords you attach to your post that make it searchable and cross-referenceable. While the Sub-Forum is the room your post lives in, the Tags are the labels that describe its contents.

How to Use Tags:

When you are creating a new thread, look for the “Tags” or “Add Keywords” box, usually found near the title.

  1. Type Relevant Keywords: Type in 1-4 words that best describe your post.

    • Example Question: “My Ball Python has cloudy eyes. What’s wrong?”

    • Good Tags: #ballpython #shedding #cloudyeyes #health

  2. Separate with Commas: Make sure to separate multiple tags with a comma (or sometimes by pressing ‘Enter’).

Why Tags are Important:

  • Better Search Results: If a member searches for “cloudy eyes,” your post will appear, even if they aren’t subscribed to the Health Sub-Forum.

  • Muting: Some users mute tags like #classifieds. Proper tagging lets users filter content they don’t want to see.

  • Species Identification: Always tag the species and the gene/morph (if known) to help other keepers!

By taking just 10 seconds to select the right Sub-Forum and add relevant Tags, you ensure your post gets the attention it deserves from the right experts!
