🦎 Welcome to ReptileCommunity.com! Your Guide to Getting Started!
Hello everyone, and a huge Irish welcome to all our new and existing members!
As your forum admin, I wanted to put together a quick, easy guide on how to navigate and use the forum to ensure the best possible experience for everyone in our reptile-loving community.
📌 The Basics: Navigating the Site
Using the forum is easy! Here are the key things you need to know to find information and start connecting:
-
Browse the Forum List: On the main page, you’ll see a list of all our different sections (or “sub-forums”). We have areas dedicated to specific species (Geckos, Snakes, Bearded Dragons, etc.), health and husbandry, classifieds, and off-topic chat. Click on the one that interests you!
-
Reading a Thread: Once inside a forum section, you’ll see a list of discussions, called “threads.” The thread title gives you an idea of the topic. Click on it to read the posts.
-
Starting a New Topic: Have a question or want to share something new? Look for the “New Thread” or “Post New Topic” button at the top of a forum section. Give your thread a clear, descriptive title to help others find it and respond.
-
Example of a great title: “Leo not eating after shedding - 5 months old”
-
Example of a poor title: “Help me!”
-
-
Replying to a Post: Want to join an ongoing discussion? Click the “Reply to Thread” or “Post Reply” button. If you’re responding to one specific person, you can use the “Quote” button on their post so everyone knows who you’re talking to!
-
Using Private Messages (PMs): Need to chat with another member one-on-one? Click on their username and look for the “Send Private Message” option. This is great for private transactions or personal advice.
💬 Community Etiquette: Be a Great Member
A strong community requires respect and patience. Please keep the following in mind:
-
Be Polite and Respectful: Treat others as you would like to be treated. We all have different levels of experience, from first-time keepers to veteran breeders. Aggressive or disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated.
-
Stay On-Topic: When posting in a specific forum (e.g., the “Ball Python” forum), try to keep your discussion relevant to that topic.
-
Searching is Your Friend! Before posting a question, please use the Search Bar (usually located at the top of the page). It’s likely your question has been asked and answered before, which can save you and others time!
-
Keep Advertising to the Classifieds: If you are a breeder or selling an animal, do not use the main discussion forums for advertising. Please use our dedicated Classifieds or For Sale/Trade sections, and always adhere to the rules posted in those forums.
-
Helpful Critique Only: If you are responding to a care question (e.g., about an enclosure setup), phrase your advice as a suggestion rather than a command. Say, “I might suggest increasing the humidity by X” instead of, “Your humidity is wrong.”
⚕️ Important: Health & Medical Advice
Please remember that we are a forum, not veterinarians.
-
We can offer advice based on experience, but if your animal is showing signs of illness, the best and safest course of action is always to consult a qualified exotic/reptile veterinarian immediately.
-
Always be wary of advice that sounds too simple or aggressive. Your pet’s health is too important!
We are thrilled to have you here and look forward to seeing your posts, your amazing photos, and your valuable advice. If you have any trouble or questions about using the forum, please don’t hesitate to send a Private Message to any Moderator or Administrator (including myself!).
Happy Herping!
